AI Just Became a Safety Issue for OT — Not Just a Cyber One
Last week, CISA, ACSC, NSA’s AI Security Center, and several global partners quietly released joint guidance on integrating AI into Operational Technology. It’s the first time governments have formally treated AI in OT as a systemic safety risk, not just a cyber concern.
The guidance assumes something many operators haven’t admitted yet:
AI will enter your plants and grids — and the biggest risk isn’t attackers, but the AI itself drifting, failing, or influencing operations in the wrong way.
Most organizations expect AI-driven attacks. Far fewer expect the earlier failure mode:
AI-induced process instability.
Examples the guidance calls out:
Model drift that quietly degrades reliability
Bad or poisoned data feeding optimization tools
Opaque AI recommendations that shift operator decision-making
Alert overload from AI-driven security products
These aren’t theoretical. They erode safety margins before an adversary even shows up.
This aligns with NIST’s AI RMF and emerging industry commentary: AI, cyber, and CPS resilience are now inseparable. Managing AI in OT is no longer optional — it’s part of the duty-of-care for plant managers, engineers, CISOs, and boards.
The real shift is this:
AI is now a change to the control strategy itself, even when it never touches a PLC.
Over the next 12–18 months, the operators who win will be the ones who:
Exploit AI for real throughput and reliability gains,
Contain AI inside a defensible engineering and cyber risk envelope, and
Explain AI to boards and regulators in clear terms tied to safety and operations.
